Syllabus Comparison — MA/F2 → K2
| Change | Area / Topic | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| REMOVED SECTION | Performance measurement (MA Section F) | The entire MA Section F is removed from K2 — this was a large section with 4 subsections (F1–F4). Removed content: mission statements; strategic/operational/tactical objectives in PM context; economic/market conditions on PM; government regulation impact; sustainability impact on PM; Balanced Scorecard (four perspectives, advantages/limitations, KPIs/CSFs, link to objectives); economy/efficiency/effectiveness (concepts, indicators, efficiency/capacity/activity ratios calculation); resource utilisation measures (service and manufacturing); ROI and RI (calculate, advantages and limitations); quality and TQM; cost control vs cost reduction; cost reduction methods; value analysis; non-financial performance indicators; short-term vs long-term performance; service industry PM; NFP and public sector PM; managerial performance measurement; benchmarking; management control reports. None of this appears in K2. |
| REMOVED | Sampling methods (MA B1) | MA B1 covered random, systematic, stratified, multistage, cluster and quota sampling. Not in K2 at all. |
| REMOVED | Spreadsheets (MA B4) | MA B4 covered features and applications of computer spreadsheets, and their use in data analysis and cost accounting. Removed from K2. |
| REMOVED | Behavioural aspects of budgeting (MA D6) | MA D6 covered: motivation importance in performance management; factors in budgetary planning/control system that influence motivation; impact of targets on motivation; managerial incentive schemes; advantages/disadvantages of participative budgeting; top-down vs bottom-up approaches to budgeting. Removed from K2. |
| REMOVED | Budgetary control and reporting beyond basic variances (MA D5) | MA D5 covered: significance of variances; potential action to eliminate variances; responsibility accounting concept; controllable vs uncontrollable costs; control reports for management. K2 retains only the basic calculation of "simple variances between a flexed budget, fixed budget and actual" (absorbed into K2 C4). The rest of MA D5 is removed. |
| REMOVED | Alternative cost accounting principles (MA C4) | MA C4 covered Activity-Based Costing (ABC), target costing, and life-cycle costing at a descriptive level (no calculations required). Removed from K2. |
| REMOVED | Index numbers (MA B2n–B2o) | MA B2n–B2o covered the purpose of index numbers, and calculation of simple and multi-item (weighted) index numbers including Laspeyre and Paasche indices. Removed from K2. |
| REMOVED | Product life cycle (MA B2p) | MA B2p described the product life cycle and its importance in forecasting. Removed from K2. |
| REMOVED | LIFO inventory valuation (MA C1a(ix)) | MA included LIFO alongside FIFO and AVCO for inventory valuation. K2 B3a(vi) specifies only FIFO and AVCO (periodic weighted average and cumulative weighted average). |
| REMOVED | EOQ gradual replenishment and constant demand reorder levels (MA C1a(vii)–C1a(viii)) | MA C1a(vii) required calculations to minimise inventory costs when inventory is gradually replenished (production run model). MA C1a(viii) required calculating reorder levels where demand in the lead time is constant. Both removed from K2. |
| REMOVED | Budget preparation extras (MA D2f–D2h) | MA D2 included: what-if analysis and scenario planning (MA D2f); impact of the general economic environment on costs/revenue in budgeting (MA D2g); importance of considering sustainability in budget preparation (MA D2h). All three removed from K2. |
| REMOVED | Limitations of management information (MA A1g) | MA A1g — "Explain the limitations of management information in providing guidance for managerial decision-making" — not in K2 A1. |
| REMOVED | Data sources description (MA A2a–A2d) | MA A2 was a separate subsection covering: three main data sources (machine/sensor, transactional, human/social); internal/external/primary/secondary sources; limitations of published information including the internet; data capture costs. Not in K2 as a named subsection — K2 A1 covers the authorisation/recording/analysis systems but not the detailed sources taxonomy. |
| NEW SECTION | Decision-making techniques (K2 Section E) | Section E is entirely new as a formal K2 section. E1 Short-term decision making covers relevant cost analysis (concept and application to business decisions) — not in MA; limiting factor analysis (identifying the limiting factor, optimal production plan under single resource constraint, make/buy under single constraint, shadow price) — the basic limiting factor was not in MA, shadow price is new; CVP analysis (contribution per unit, C/S ratio, break-even point, margin of safety, target profit, P/V chart, CVP assumptions) — CVP was not formally in MA as a standalone topic. E2 Long-term decision making significantly expands MA D4 by explicitly adding ROCE as a named investment appraisal method; adding relevant costing principles to investment decisions; specifying discounted payback (MA just said "payback"); and stating perpetuities explicitly (MA D4i had the formula but K2 E2 makes it a standalone named outcome). |
| RESTRUCTURED | Section A expanded to include all statistical techniques | MA Section B (Data analysis and statistical techniques) had 4 subsections. K2 absorbs the statistical content into Section A as A3 (summarising/analysing data), A4 (linear functions), A5 (linear regression), A6 (time series), A7 (big data). What's kept from MA Section B: big data characteristics and types; categorical/numerical data types; descriptive/inferential analysis; mean/mode/median; measures of dispersion; normal distribution; linear functions and high-low method; scatter diagrams; regression analysis; correlation coefficient and coefficient of determination; time series (trend, seasonal variation, moving averages, additive and multiplicative). What's removed: sampling methods (B1); index numbers and Laspeyre/Paasche (B2n–o); product life cycle (B2p); spreadsheets (B4); expected values (replaced by probability calculations — K2 A3e: "calculate simple and joint probabilities" whereas MA B3h had "calculate expected values"). |
| EXAM CHANGE | Section B MTQ topics: Performance measurement replaced by Decision-making | MA Section B MTQs examined: Budgeting, Standard costing, and Performance measurement. K2 Section B MTQs examine: C Budgeting, D Standard costing and variance analysis, E Decision-making techniques. Performance measurement MTQ is replaced by Decision-making techniques. The note on Budgeting MTQs changes from "can include tasks from B2 Analytical techniques and B4 Spreadsheets" to "can include tasks from A3–A6" (data analysis, linear functions, regression, time series). |
| RAISED | Cost codes: K to S (K2 B1f) | MA A3f was "Explain and illustrate the use of codes in categorising transactions" [K]. K2 B1f is "Explain and interpret the use of codes in categorising transactions" [S] — both raised from K to S and verb changed to add "interpret". |
| RAISED | Variance interrelationships: K to S (K2 D3c) | MA E2h was "Explain the interrelationships between the variances" [K]. K2 D3c is "Explain the interrelationships between variances" [S] — raised from K to S. |
| Retained | Core cost accounting content | Cost classification and behaviour, material/labour/overhead accounting (with accounting entries), absorption and marginal costing, job/batch/process/service costing — all retained with equivalent content. |
| Retained | Budgeting core content | Purpose of budgeting, budget preparation (functional, cash, master), asset budgeting, fixed and flexible budgets — all retained. Simple budget variances (flexed vs fixed vs actual) absorbed from MA D5 into K2 C4. |
| Retained | Standard costing and variance calculations | All variance types (sales, materials, labour, variable overhead, fixed overhead), reconciliation of budgeted to actual profit under both absorption and marginal costing — retained. |
