What is the main difference between CMA US and CPA?
CMA US certifies management accounting and financial decision-making inside organisations, while CPA is a US licence centred on public accounting — audit, financial reporting and tax.
CMA US is awarded by IMA and covers financial planning, performance and analytics (Part 1) and strategic financial management (Part 2). It is a global certification with no country-specific licensing step.
CPA is a licence granted by a US state board of accountancy. Candidates pass the Uniform CPA Examination — developed by AICPA and administered with NASBA — and then meet that state’s education, experience and ethics requirements.
How long does each take?
CMA US is usually faster — two exams, which most Global Fin X students complete in 12–18 months — while CPA has four exam sections plus state licensing steps.
IMA requires both CMA parts to be passed within 3 years of entering the CMA program. There is no mandated order, and you can sit both parts in the same exam window. IMA recommends roughly 150–170 study hours for Part 1, with a similar commitment for Part 2.
For CPA, the time you have to pass all four sections (the credit window) and the requirements for the licence itself are set by each state board, so the total time depends on your state and your education background.
What does each cost in India?
At Global Fin X, CMA US coaching costs ₹50,000 for both parts plus IMA's fees; CPA fees are set by NASBA and individual state boards and vary by state.
CMA US costs have two parts: coaching, and IMA fees (membership, CMA entrance fee and one exam fee per part), which are charged in US dollars and paid to IMA. Our fee page shows the current IMA fee breakdown in rupees.
CPA costs include application, per-section exam and licensing fees, and — for Indian degree holders — usually an education evaluation. These are charged in US dollars and differ by state, so check NASBA and your state board for current amounts. Global Fin X does not offer CPA coaching.
Which has better job prospects in India and abroad?
It depends on the role: CMA US aligns with corporate finance and FP&A roles, while CPA aligns with US audit, tax and financial reporting work.
In India, CMA US fits finance roles inside companies — FP&A, controlling, costing and corporate finance — especially in US-headquartered multinationals and global capability centres.
CPA fits US GAAP audit, US tax and reporting work, including India-based teams that serve US clients. In the US, attest (audit) services are reserved for licensed CPAs and CPA firms, so CPA is the credential for a US public-accounting career.
Can you do both CMA US and CPA?
Yes — the two are complementary, but neither exempts you from the other’s exams, so each must be passed in full.
There is some overlap: CMA Part 1 covers external financial reporting and internal controls, which also appear in the CPA exam. If you are unsure, starting with CMA US is practical because it has fewer exams and no state licensing step; you can add CPA later if your career moves towards US public accounting.
Who should choose which?
Choose CMA US if…
- You want FP&A, budgeting, costing, controlling or corporate finance roles.
- You work, or want to work, in a US multinational or global capability centre in India.
- You want a global credential in two exams, with flexible experience you can complete before or after the exams.
- You do not want to deal with US state licensing rules.
Choose CPA (US) if…
- You want a US public-accounting career in audit, attestation or US tax.
- You plan to sign or lead audits of US entities, which requires a CPA licence.
- Your education meets (or can be made to meet) the requirements of a US state board.
- You are ready for four exam sections and state-specific licensing steps.
