CMA US vs CA: Which Should You Choose?
Choose CA (ICAI) if you want statutory audit, tax practice or your own practice in India — it has three levels and a two-year articleship. Choose CMA US if you want corporate finance, FP&A or multinational roles sooner: two IMA exam parts, offered in three testing windows a year, that you can take alongside a job or degree.

What is the main difference between CMA US and CA?
CA is India’s statutory accounting qualification — the route to audit and tax practice — while CMA US is a global certification in management accounting for finance roles inside companies.
CA India is awarded by ICAI after Foundation, Intermediate and Final exams plus two years of practical training. Statutory audits of Indian companies are signed by practising Chartered Accountants, which CMA US does not replace.
CMA US is awarded by IMA and covers financial planning, performance and analytics (Part 1) and strategic financial management (Part 2). It has no articleship; the two years of experience can come before or after the exams.
How long does each take?
CMA US is much shorter — most Global Fin X students finish both parts in 12–18 months — while CA typically takes around 4.5–5 years including the two-year articleship.
IMA gives you three years to pass both parts, and exams are offered in January–February, May–June and September–October. You can take the parts in either order.
ICAI holds Foundation, Intermediate and Final exams three times a year — January, May and September — after ICAI’s Council decided on 27 March 2025 to move CA Final from two sittings a year to three. Graduates can skip Foundation and enter Intermediate directly.
What does each cost in India?
At Global Fin X, CMA US coaching costs ₹50,000 for both parts, plus IMA’s fees in US dollars; CA costs are mainly ICAI registration and exam fees plus coaching, spread over several years.
IMA fees (membership, CMA entrance fee and one exam fee per part) are paid directly to IMA. Our fee page shows the current breakdown in rupees, and the cost calculator adds everything up.
Which has better job prospects?
It depends on the career: CA is essential for audit and tax practice in India, while CMA US is aimed at FP&A, costing, controlling and corporate finance roles, especially in multinationals.
IMA’s 2023 Global Salary Survey found CMAs earn 21% more in median total compensation than non-CMAs globally. Our salary guide shows sourced pay ranges for finance roles in India by experience.
Can you do both CMA US and CA?
Yes. The two are complementary — CMA US adds management accounting depth for CAs moving into corporate finance, and CA students can sit CMA US once they meet IMA’s education requirement.
IMA accepts a related professional certification in place of a bachelor’s degree, so a qualified CA meets the education requirement. Neither qualification exempts you from the other’s exams.
Who should choose which?
Choose CMA US if…
- You want FP&A, budgeting, costing, controlling or corporate finance roles.
- You work, or want to work, in a multinational or global capability centre.
- You want a global credential in two exams, without an articleship.
- You are already a CA or graduate and want to move into industry finance.
Choose CA India if…
- You want to sign statutory audits or run a tax practice in India.
- You are comfortable with three levels of exams and a two-year articleship.
- You are starting after Class 12 and want India’s core accounting qualification.
- You see your career in CA firms or Indian corporate finance leadership.
Frequently asked questions

CMA US is shorter: two exam parts that most Global Fin X students complete in 12–18 months. CA has three levels of exams plus a two-year articleship and typically takes around 4.5–5 years.
Can a CA do CMA US?
Yes. IMA accepts a related professional certification instead of a bachelor’s degree, so qualified CAs meet the education requirement. CAs still need to pass both CMA parts.
How often are CA exams held?
ICAI holds Foundation, Intermediate and Final exams three times a year, in January, May and September. CMA US exams are held in January–February, May–June and September–October windows.
Does CMA US have an articleship like CA?
