Are CMA US and CMA India the same qualification?
No — they share the letters "CMA" but are awarded by different bodies, test different syllabi and lead to different careers.
CMA US (Certified Management Accountant) is awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA, USA) and focuses on management accounting and financial decision-making inside organisations.
CMA India is the qualification of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), a statutory body established under the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959. It is centred on cost and management accounting, with Indian tax, law and cost audit in its scope.
How long does each take?
CMA US is usually much faster: two exams that most Global Fin X students complete in 12–18 months, versus three ICMAI levels plus practical training for CMA India.
IMA requires both CMA US parts to be passed within 3 years of entering the program, in any order. The 2 years of experience can be completed before the exams or within 7 years of passing them, so working professionals can study without pausing their job.
CMA India progresses through Foundation, Intermediate and Final, with practical training prescribed by ICMAI. How long it takes depends on your entry level (Class 12 or graduate) and on ICMAI’s exam calendar and training rules.
What does each cost in India?
CMA US at Global Fin X costs ₹50,000 in coaching plus IMA's fees in US dollars; CMA India fees are set by ICMAI in rupees and are listed on icmai.in.
CMA US involves IMA membership, a one-time CMA entrance fee and one exam fee per part, all charged in US dollars and paid to IMA. Our fee page converts the current IMA fees to rupees alongside the coaching fee.
CMA India involves ICMAI registration and exam fees for each level, plus any coaching you choose. Because ICMAI revises these periodically, check icmai.in for current amounts. Global Fin X does not coach CMA India.
Which has better job prospects in India and abroad?
For multinational and international finance roles CMA US is the more portable credential, while CMA India is the route for cost audit and cost-accounting roles under Indian law.
CMA US is recognised across 100+ countries and is especially strong in US-headquartered multinationals and global capability centres in India, in roles such as FP&A, controlling and corporate finance.
CMA India is primarily an Indian qualification. Under the Companies Act, 2013, cost audits are carried out by cost accountants in practice who are ICMAI members, so CMA India is the qualification for that work.
Can you do both CMA US and CMA India?
Yes — the two are complementary rather than competing, so a CMA India holder can add CMA US for international recognition.
A CMA India holder who has a bachelor’s degree meets the CMA US education requirement, but must still pass both CMA US parts; IMA does not exempt either part.
The cost and management accounting foundation from CMA India overlaps with CMA US Part 1 topics such as cost management, budgeting and performance management.
